Blogger's Identity Revealed - Shameless Self-Promotion
April 4th 2007 12:55
Well, actually I though it would be a bit of fun - this is my latest edit. It's my showreel, and it's starts with my name.
I know you've all been on the edges of your ergonomic computer stools, just waiting to find out the true identity of the one who calls himself Yoda76. Sadly the reailty isn't all that exciting, but hopefully you'll get a kick out of my reel. It's hardly comprehensive of my body of work (it doesn't even touch my TV stuff), but hopefully there's a cool vibe from my favourite images.
And in parting I shall say only...
it's a big reel... ve-ry big reel.... it's a big reel... i've... ma-ade....

I fell of my not so ergonomic computer chair....
I love the red wine (what is that from?) and Indian woman in rearview mirror.
...and here I thought your true identity was Eminem...
Okay that's just lame...it's 1:07am and I'm resisting the dark side...

Sure. I'll buy that
Dusk
Thanks!
The red wine is from a TV Commercial for Taylors Wines that has been on air in the last few months. Less so now. It's such a fantastic image.
The Indian Girl inthe rearview mirror is from a short film I cut called "Brown Trash" which has been doing very well at festivals. It's about a young girl that struglles with her ethnic background and her relationship with her father after her Amma's death. It's one of my favourites! I might get that up onto my YouTube Chennel and do a post. I was waiting for it's festival run to come to an end before I put it online.
I'm stoked that you picked that shot, Dusk, as it was suggested to me that I drop it. It's one of my favourite shots ever, and certainly the shot of the film. I feel vindicated!
Eminem... hmmm... nothing slim about me I'm afraid. Although The Dark Side is always shady ;o)
A pleasure as always, guys. Thanks for checking it out.

That clip of the Indian girl looking in the rear view mirror really stood out to me during the two times I watched it (and I think I might watch it again).
What I also liked was that the images weren't so fast that they became just a blur, they were on screen long enough to absorb them. The music is completely apt too.
Congratulations!!!
PS I just read your comment to Dusk about the Indian girl....really interesting....
PPS Feel free to post more, I'd like to see it....

Done. I will start posting more of my work, hopefully somefilms in their entirety.
I'll start with Ep 1 ofthe podcast I started last year - less exciting, but very interesting I thinkfroma "Behind The Scenes" kinda vibe.
I will also clear with the Director of Brown Trash so I can get that up too.
Thanks!

Thanks, katyzzz, you're too kind.
I blog purely as a hobby. You'll notice no adsense in my posts etc (other than the usual Orble ones), and have no delusions of a career path or money to be made here.
For me, it's a way to interact with people I wouldn't normally, and have already met a few people here that are interesting reads, and even more interesting discussions.
That's all.

Now why does that 'sound' less than wholesome when put like that?....!
I'm a journalist but I dabble in the creative side.
What do you mean what's the difference?
...
The boring side of the camera is the side the world sees. Not the side where all the real work is done. Do not know why the front of house is called the talent....

Didn't mean it that way! Last I checked my name wasn't David...
Because the talent don't always ALSO need skill. Or craft.

The last part I'm guessing you mean my logo? Yeah I kinda like it too. It's actually Xena, the newest planet they discovered just past Pluto.
It was there all the time, just on the outskirts, but only caused a phenomenon just in recent years.I thought that was an appropriate analogy to my work and career. Glad you like it.
At the moment just doing my usual freelancing gigs and jobs through my business, and about to start another short film - essentially killing time before the next biggie which is a very post-heavy series for a major network. It's a great concept (not allowed to talk about it yet - trust the peeker to try and get an early look! Sneaky!), and I'm sorta going to be post-supervising as well as editing. Lots of CG shots.
Should be airing in late June.
I was toying with the idea of starting a "Behind The Scenes" blog to diarise the making of the show... What do you guys reckon?

I love your sense of celluliid rhythmn....A buddy and I are just finishing up editing his feature and man did it take some work..I love it though because IMO its the only way to truly understand the language of cinema....cutting on emotion, cutting on action....when in doubt refer to Walter Murch is my motto.
You have skill my friend keep it up.

Murch is great. "In the Blink of An Eye" and "Conversations" are very well-worn books in my library. But I think only experiencecan illuminate how misguided he can be sometimes - eg the formulas he uses.
Editing is such an organic process, that applying strict formulas is madness. It's a real case of gotta know the rules in order to break them.
You are right about film grammar - so many of the directors and producers starting out that I have worked with learn a lot in the edit, and it really affects their future approach and work. Good to see you've found that, too. Have you ever cut anything before?
I follow one cardinal rule when editing, at the expense of all else - "whatever works".
When / how will we see the feature? Maybe a teaser on YouTube?
;o)

Totally agree that to adhere strictly to any rule or formula is editorial death....cut with the gut is the golden rule, as you say if it feels right then it probably works...
Hoping to actually sell the feature to cable or at least rent out a cinema for a one off screening. Will post more on my blog as I know more.
