Gabriel - Indie Film Sneak Peek Trailer!!
June 23rd 2007 01:51
I have been hanging for this for quite a while!
I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Director Shane Abbess on this film, and I knew from then it was going to be huge. Without saying too much, these guys made this film on what equates to the smell of an oily rag for any film, let alone a film like this (there is no official figure, but let's say I doubt you could buy a good new car for the amount that was spent).
The film has since been sold to Sony, and is due for international cinema release (supposedly) sometime this year.
This vid is a little teaser that was made during production, so it looks like it hasn't been graded properly or had any of the CG put in place, and it still looks incredible!
I'm glad to have played my (very small) part in this epic Indie triumph - more power to Aussie Indie filmmakers - they're gonna be the ones to shake up the industry.
Watch it before it gets pulled down off YouTube!

This looks quite good, did you edit the film?

When the original editor was delayed on another project that went over, I came within a gnat's of cutting this baby from what I understand. The one that got away...?
For now I'm happy with my Assistant Editor's credit, and the fact that I've met a fantastic Director and worked with him since (editing the 'kingsmillrox' video, and 'Still Life').
With any luck I'll get asked onto the next one

Power to you Mr AD.
My best friend is an Indie film maker and I'm hoping that he will be a shaker...he's already a mover.
...are these American actors?

Best of luck to your friend - it's really got nothing and everything to do with luck. If he's good and he has a good story to tell - and a good solid plan of attack to back it up - he'll go places.

...explain Steve Irwin.
It's funny though...I wonder if Kidman and Jackman and the jolly swagman (well they're all '...man'!) will have American accents in 'Australia'.
You know?...so it sells overseas.
This is something that really disappoints me. No I don't have an Australian accent but I do love the iconic languid laconic Australian drawl....
And I know that the Americans do love it too. It's all about ownership and power. Can't let the world know that Hollywood isn't all American
All of the above...and Venice, Montreal and (hopefully) LA.
His latest short film. Can't say much about it unfortunately because that's a stipulation of these film festivals...the 'exclusivity'.
It's such a wank.
Whoops. Sorry. Forgot this isn't a PG rated blog like mine....
Be well Yoda...and you know what buddy...I really hope that one day, we can say this about you...

I'll take either to be honest, but Oscar's on my list of life ticks...

I understand what you mean - there's two sides to the argument. One is yours - why should we have to hide the fact that this movie is Australian?
Put this into perspective, though...
This film would never EVER have received funding in this country. These films just don't get made in Australia. But it's not for our lack of skill or storytelling. These guys went out on a pretty big limb with this, and due to their perserverance and talent, it's paid off.
But when you're putting it all on the line like that (I heard the Director was working in a call centre to make ends meet while they were shooting!), you want to do everything you can to make sure that there's a payoff. If a simple accent is enough to pull the wool over the eyes of those with money, then I personally think it's a clever way of getting a leg up.
I don't suspect that Shane Abbess and Matt Todd are going to have much hassle getting another project off the ground once this hits the screens (I heard it might be November?).
Meanwhile they have leap-frogged a few rungs on the ladder by working with an accent.
And from the point of view of the actors, well, thgey now have a testament to the fact that they can do the accent (I've heard many stories of Aussie actors getting slammed in auditions due to their accent when they first walk in).
Infiltrate the system, THEN take it over...
Thanks for the kind wishes - I'll make sure the Orble Posse are on the invite list for my next film screening ;o)

I'll be watching for this in November.
As for Aussie accents, I have a little story:
When I was an air traffic controller in the Philippines, we used to get an Aussie pilot in about every 3 months or so to drop supplies. The 4 women in the whole base operations building (beside myself) used to have me call them when he was on the air with me in the tower so they could listen to him talking..they all had major crushes on his voice and accent.
We never saw him, as he'd just pull up to the building and his loadmaster would offload the supplies. Then one day--it happened! He had to disembark to file a flight plan. All the women crowded anxiously up into the tower with me with binoculars to see what the young Aussie adonis looked like....
Nice looking guy, but well over 60. Married, with grandkids.
That says something for the power of the Aussie accent!

I have heard of the love affair with the Aussie accent, but for some reason itdoesn't always translate on screen.
You were an air-traffic controller? What an unusual job!

Yes, I was a controller in Asia for 4 years, then another 8 in the U.S.--till my eyesight fell below standards.

We had a middle-aged computers teacher in High School, and he would constantly regale us with his stories of when he spent 12 years working for the defense force... or 10 years for an Aussie Telco... 8 years for the government building computers etc...
...until one day we added it all up a realised that he must have been around 123 years old to have fit it all in!

I finally saw the film on Monday night at a cast and crew screening - I can honestly say that it is unlike any film made in Australia in a very very long time, if not ever.
Go see it opening weekend!!
