McDonalds gets sexy in Japan...

June 12th 2007 13:49

Ah, the Japanese. A culture like no other.

But they still have McDonalds.

And in true Japanese style, they can make even the most innocuous thing (an ad for a burger) disconcerting.

Very little to say. Just watch...

It's the tomatoes at the end that really weird me out.

I do like the ads.

...still wouldn't convince me to eat the stuff....

The guy 'weirds' me out. Ronald McDonald emo style.

There's not enough fucking glamour in the West. After having lived in Japan I must say that (second maybe to Iceland) those people fucking know how to look good.

Dusk,

Um...some say the tomato is the fruit of love (as opposed to the apple...)...yeah okayyy.

Hmmm... big and round, soft, juicy, tasty, nice to look at....

I can see that

Philip,

A little too pouty and Emo for my tastes, but whatever blows your hair back...

charliesgirl,

orange'sh red hair

I believe the colour you're looking for is Ronald Red.

Are you sure it's Japan?

I can appreciate the effort, but the colour definitely de-sexify it...

Androgenous types making goofy attempts at sexy looks into the camera, clutching a hamburger.

And they say Americans are weird.

Weirdness isn't so easily guffawed at in Japan. (Aside: "Emo" is a terribly lazy word -- what does it mean, really? A tie? Long hair? Epicene long hair that's sideswept? Androgeny? Or just a pouty lip?)

I think it's interesting that we've all given the girl more leeway; it's typical of western ideals of appearance to grant permission to the general public to like aesthetically diverse manifestations of sexualization in women. But! Wait until you see what happens when I show up to my local surfside California pizza joint in leather pants, a white denim jacket, no shirt, beeswaxed hair and mascara. (True story.)

As long as Japan isn't so cowardly to be afraid of looking silly and thus continuing to actually create content worthy of actual discourse, I will continue to point my finger at you Anglophilic plebes and shout: "BORING!"

Next: Japanese commercials.
They're always weird. Often times they apparently have nothing to do with the product itself. Many a golden rule of London-based copywriting tossed. What they do do, though, is generate a bunch of strange mnemonics (semaphores, more like?) that do pop in your head and remind you of the product. Very clever.

The case of this commercial isn't really so abstract; the historical/vulviform association is fairly obvious to anyone who's actually literate. But! Broken (or improved?) notions of Western couture, stylized focus on the gaze and the object, mildly obscure cultural references, all laced with a bit of (nigh undetectable?) self-aware humor -- quite Japanese.

Meanwhile, when I do actually find myself in front of a TV, I see commercials involving gyrating hips and frogs that manage the utterances of "bud", "weiss", and "er". At least in a European commercial I may enjoy myself enough to reach an orgasm.

Anyway, Yoda, thanks for the awesome find!

Great post.... I hate clowns...gives me the creeps so these two are actually an improvement. Wow looks like they are trying to win the "erotic hamburger" award. I want to know sales results after this campaign.

Cib,

Yep definitely Japan. There are some articles around the web calling them "Neo-Ronalds"..

D. Armenta,

Americans are weird, right?

Thanks for the visit.

Tracey

Yup - still McCrapu-san.

Phillip,

Can we see that on YouTube!?

You're right, it's interesting to see what connotations culture brings to anything. I'm a screen editor, and I constantly have to think about the meaning of every frame on the screen, and try to get outside myself to do it. Every image has a cultural reference point depending on who you are.

Sorry if you misconstrued - I'm not being derogatory here, it's just an odd and amusing ad to me. I don't fear it or think it's wrong - just we'd never see ads like this here.

I've seen the bud ad you mean... ho-hum...

Thanks for the visit... and the essay!

Anonymous,

Thanks for visiting...

Mis,

"erotic hamburger" award

=D Sounds like an MTV Movie Award...

Yoda,

We must be--we came up with Ronald McDonald in the first place.

I don't take commercials-or myself- that seriously. I still think the jump at the end of the androgenous guy's clip (like someone off-camera goosed him) was hilarious.

To each his own, by any standards--East, West, South, North, or Boring.

I think a few compasses' needles have been stuck on boring.

Precisely

I think a few compasses' needles have been stuck on boring.

I'm just a dull little white boy from Sydney. I'll wear that...
