Not Itchy but Scratchy - The Motion Picture Film Art of Len Lye

February 13th 2007 09:14

An editor friend of mine put me on to the work of New Zealand filmmaker / artist Len Lye.

Len made his art by physically scratching and colouring 35mm film negative to create works of art synched to music. Very cool, and incredibly difficult to do.

All this is 1935!

Eventually, people were asking him to make ads for them (like the Postal Service, which you see here as "A Colour Box" (1935).

The video also contains "Free Radicals" from 1958.

Awesome stuff - a real pioneer and precursor of today's cg motion graphics.

How do you make a film without a camera?

Ask Len Lye.

Ahmed,

Ah yes, I forgot to mention that "A Colour Box" was made in 1935!

"Free Radicals" was made in the 1950s.
