Where The Wild Things Are - 1983 Disney Animation
February 12th 2007 12:16
In 1983, over a decade before Toy Story, Director John Lasseter (now at Pixar) did some tests for Disney which were a combination of 3D computer-generated backgrounds and traditional 2D animated characters.
At the time, Disney owned the rights to Maurice Sendak's "Where The Wild Things Are", one of my favourite kids' books, and still one of my favourites today. This was the subject of the tests.
This is a little scene from the beginning of the story, and is mind-blowingly good for 3D CG animation that dates back to 1983!
Unfortunately, nothing became of this particular exercise, and Disney let their option lapse.
2008 will see the release of "Where The Wild Things Are", directed by bent director Spike Jonze, and shot here in Australia, with absolutely nothing to do with Disney.

Film & TV on DVD
Where the Wild Things Are is one of my fave books too from back in the day. Im quite looking for to Spike Jonze's stab at it, his sensabilities seem appropriate.
Amazing footage, the CG is amazing for early 80's pioneering. I own and dig Last Starfighter and Tron two early CG films from the era, but by comparison Lassaters stuff looks superior.

When I was a kid I used to dream about fighting against the evil Xur and the Ko-Dan Armada by using the Gunstar's Death Blossom! Everything about that movie is a great piece of storytelling.
Tron was cool, but LS was way cooler! Far more human: "Go back to sleep or I'll tell mom about your Playboys!"
